The Fog of Long Island Sound

The fog that morning was so thick it took several hours for the sun to burn it off.

Enought time for me to capture the eery quality that only a dense fog can manufacture.

Late Afternoon Composition #1

As promised I have downloaded about 10 of my latest paintings. Several of the landscapes were started from life then finished up in the studio. This is a new way of working for me and I think the results speak for themselves. I particularly like the quality of light I captured in the painting above. It was mid spring in Mass. and the black flies were ferocious. Sometimes the best paintings come out of the worst situations. Monday I'm heading up to Mass. again (one of my favorite painting spots) for a week. I hope to come home with eight or ten paintings if the weather holds and all goes well. Till then enjoy the show.

To all those who have checked in from time to time and found no new postings I apologize.
Last winter was a difficult period of self reflection which I am happy to say has led me to a new and deeper understanding of my goals as a painter of pictures.
I will explain this in further detail in some of the upcoming posts. I have many images to share.
For now here are six new paintings that reflect some of the changes I mentioned.
As one can see they are figure paintings; a new and exciting subject for me.
For those of you who are fans of my Landscape work never fear I have not abandonded that genre and will be posting some new efforts in the coming weeks.

I arrived at this site a little late in the morning and the sun was blasting.

Having forgotten my sun-block I opened up my trusty umbrella and was just able to squeeze under it's shade. Because there was a dog kennel near by supplying a hostile soundtrack to this mutilated, sun blasted landscape, the whole scene seemed like something out of Dante's descent into one of the 9 circles of hell. How cool is that?

Because of the brillant light and monocromatic color of the ground I composed this piece by using mostly warm and cool colors with very subtle value contrast, except for the trees.

Chesterfield Gorge

Another brillant sunny day.

I scrambled down this very deep gorge carrying all my equipment and jumping from stone to rock made my way to the middle of the stream and set up my easel at the begining, as-it-where, of the gorge, where the water enters the deep cut.

Above the sound of rushing water I was serenaded by passing king fishers chattering excitedly about whatever king fishers get excited about.

Me, I was excited about all these huge rock ledges and bolders polished smooth (slippery) by the rushing stream.

I felt fairly successful in capturing a little corner of this tremendous work of nature.

Westhampton Landscape

This was taken on South Road in West Hampton rather late on an overcast day.

The wonderful thing about it being overcast is the surrounding colors become much more saturated.

As you can see the trees were just starting to turn their brilliant face.

When I started this painting on the Connetcicut River I was thinking of one of Corot's compositions on a lake with some architecture in the distance. In this case a factory.

Made late in the day, the sun was just about to disappear behind some apartment buildings
So I had to work fast fast fast. From set up to finished painting I captured the fleeting moment in under 35 minutes.
"Who's the man?!!!"

Connecticut River

Painting along the river again I started this composition in full sun that shortly was lost to cloud cover. It is always fatal to a painting to change direction in mid stream so I continued painting the light from memory; a challange most times too difficult for me. In this case I was not too disappointed.

While painting in this deserated spot I was suprised when joined by an older hippy looking type (long beard, tee shirt old jeans) who, suprisied as I was, had come down to the banks of the Connectcut River to relax in nature a little before going to work. We both worked in silence, He meditating and I painting. As he was leaving he admired my painting and told me about a beautiful stone he had found at this very spot. Looking back I think we probably had a lot in common.

Painting on the street in the city is never easy. Everything is moving and changing.

As was the case with this study I made for a commissioned painting.

After a truck pulled up completely blocking my view I gave up and came back to the studio and finished the painting from photos I had taken earlier.

I recently returned from two weeks in the foothills of the Berkshires.
Far from all the concerns of everyday life, I was painting an average of two panels a day.
It sounds like work but for me I was happy as a kid at play.

Up-Date On The Salmagundi Club Event

As you all know I was invited to participate in the 2010 Non-Members Show at the Salmagundi club. It was a juried show with over 1000 entries, 120 participants, and 20 prizes. I was lucky enough to receive the Allied Artists award with a cash prize of $250.
Thanks to the Salmagundi Club and Allied Artists for their encouragement in selecting me for these honors. Standing in front of my entry The Old Petrol Tank

There was wine, snacks, a band, and lots of networking

It's been a while since I've posted; summer is always a busy time for a plein-air painter.
I have 16 new pieces for you to look at.
My work has become subtler but more complex.
This piece for instance is a subject I would not have approached last year.
The close values and almost colorless composition work well to create that mysterious feeling one gets at the entrance of a deep wood.
As for the other postings I'll let you be the judge.
